Weekly payments at Christmas
Every Christmas period WorkCover WA receives a spike in calls from financially distressed injured workers faced with missed weekly compensation payments.
If you are an employer managing a current workers’ compensation claim, and you intend to close down over Christmas, talk to your insurer about your obligations to continue payments during this period. In most cases, weekly compensation payments must continue regardless of leave or shut down arrangements.
Unlawfully discontinuing weekly payments is an offence under the Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management Act 1981. Employers can face a $2,000 penalty for each missed payment. Employers are reminded workers’ compensation is a statutory entitlement and payments to workers should not be interrupted unless the insurer has instructed a change to payments.
