Becoming an approved medical specialist

To be designated as an approved medical specialist under section 146F(1) of the Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management Act 1981, a person must fulfil a number of criteria. Two of those criteria are to:

1. Have undertaken training in the WorkCover WA Education Module, which includes training in the WorkCover Guides; and

2. (i) Undertaken training in the use of the American Medical Association Guides (AMA V Guides) to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, or have current accreditation as a "Certified Independent Medical Examiner" with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (ABIME); or

(ii) Undertaken other training in impairment assessment approved by WorkCover WA.

The AMA 5 training is to be held at Royal North Shore Hospital (on behalf of WorkCover NSW) on 3 and 4 October 2009. This is the first requisite to be designated Approved Medical Practitioner status. Click here for the registration form.

WorkCover WA would like to inform medical practitioners interested in applying for designation as an approved medical specialist that WorkCover WA will be holding a training session in the WorkCover WA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment in November 2009. Details of this training will be available soon.
